This chorus is being performed for the first time in 2025. This is another chorus falling in Part II Scene 4 of Messiah, which is often cut to shorten the program. The words to this chorus are taken from Heb 1:6, but there is a short tenor recitative titled "Unto Which of the Angels Said He at Any Time?" that precedes it taken from Heb 1:5. Here are verses 5 and 6 together: "For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, |
|
And let all the angels of God worship him." Verse 5 begins with a rhetorical question, "For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee?" The answer, of course, is he never said that to any angel. The point this scripture is making is that Jesus was appointed by God himself to be greater than any other earthly or heavenly being except himself. Verse 6 reinforces this order even further when God commanded the angels to worship Jesus.
