The Lord Gave the Word - No. 37

This chorus is not being performed in 2022.  This chorus falls in Part II Scene 5 of Messiah, which is also often cut to shorten the program. After Jesus' resurrection and before ascending into heaven he gave his disciples the great commission, to "go into all the world and preach the gospel." The preaching of the gospel began in earnest after the disciples were given "power from on high" in the form of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The scriptures in this section of Messiah are Old Testament prophecies regarding the time period of Pentecost and after.  In "The Lord Gave the Word," taken from Psalm 68:11, the

psalmist prophecies of an age when the Lord makes available his Word freely to all nations and people.  We are living now in this age!  At the judgement some may say, "I never heard!" But there will be no excuse.  God can say, "I gave the Word through a great company of preachers."
